What if the meter is off by 20%? Not enough to really make many of us question our bill, but still getting over or under charged. Very easy to remove and refurbish or replace them. All gas meters are wireless now. Nstar or Grid drives around in a van and can read them remotely. Do they still walk on your property and take a reading from your meter? It significantly reduces liability on both sides to not have to enter someone's home or walk on their property.

What if a tiny pinhole leak has developed? When was the last time you went outside and tested your gas meter for a leak? All of these things are most easily addressed by a replacement.

Beyond all of that, it is a state law, not just the will of the gas companies.

Calibration, as well as state law.

In my industry, we typically swap out various similar measuring devices on a 6-12 month rotation. It's usually a 1-2 week turnaround to have the device calibrated. Not exactly apples to apples comparison to a gas meter, but i'm sure 7 years was a negotiated number between the gas companies and the regulatory agencies to find a happy medium between a huge expense and consumer protection.
