We are relocating to Hanscom AFB from the suburbs of ATL. I am originally from Boston , but haven't lived there in 28 yrs and when I did live there it was just me so therefore I lived off of Commonwealth Ave in Alston. This time living in Mass I am married with two children ( actually three, but one is staying in Ga for college) how is the life in Bedford , also is there diversity? I know nothing about the town of Bedford I'm a little nervous about this move. Any advice or information would be great👍🏽

Bedford is a great town with a good community. It isin't the most diverse town but not many Boston suburbs are. What is your budget btw? Bedford and the towns surrounding it can get very expensive.

Tysmith95, as far as our budget , we were prepared to pay $1800-2200; however since this post we found out that we qualify for housing on Hanscom, the three bedroom they are offering us is going to run us $1900 with everything included except for cable tv. Hopefully we can stay at least two years to save up for a very pricey home. Do you know anything about the surrounding areas and their home prices? Thanks for any advice this website is great

Hanscom is surrounded by Bedford, Lexington, Concord, and Lincoln. All those towns have some of the priciest real estate in the Boston area - you would be looking at $500K+ for a small house worthy of a tear down.

$500K is a distant memory in most of those towns, even for a house in extremely poor condition. Bedford being the exception. You may be able to get a small cape/multi-level, but competition for anything under $1million is fierce in any of those towns. You could try Burlington, Maynard, Billerica, Woburn, Wilmington, or even Acton. Prices and school quality differ. Just go on redfin or trulia on the map setting and go outward from Hanscom. If you see something in your price range look at the great school rating (not perfect but gives you an idea), go on schooldigger.com, and niche.com and read reviews. This is the best you can do until you move here, talk to people, and visit each town.

Chelmsford and Westford could also be good options.

Honestly if I were in your situation I'd stay in the 1900 a month place as long as you can. That's cheap for the area.

I agree. Will also give you all a chance to get settled in the new job and learn the area. Decisions made about staying, living elsewhere, etc. will be much wiser when made a year or so of experience.

This.

$1900/mo for a 3BR in the Bedford area? That's damn cheap.
