I have a somewhat confusing question hopefully someone can help me find the answer to. I live in ma, I'm looking at buying a truck from a individual in Michigan. I want to fly down there and drive the truck back. In order to do so I need to get plates, is there any way I can get plates for it before flying down there? Or do I have to fly down there to get the title. Fly back, and fly down again after the getting plates to drive it home?
Thank you

You have to get the title so you can turn it in to the registry when you apply for a new registration (and title). The seller has to sign the car over to you.

Okay so I'm going to have to fly down there. Get the title. Fly back. And fly down again to pick it up?

Maybe you can wire the seller the funds (or send them a check) and then they can overnight you the signed title. Then you head to the registry for plates and fly out there with them.

That's a good idea! What about temp plates? Would it be possible down in MI to somehow get temp plates to drive it back to mass and then register it here? I thought I've read somewhere before that you can do something like that but I imagine the laws have changed since then

You aren't a resident of Michigan so they aren't going to give you temps.

Like MikePRU said, they could overnight you the title. Of course you'd have to trust them. Have you seen the car in person?

Reach out to the Michigan DMV and see if they offer in transit or temporary plates to allow you to move the car. If not, you will need to have the owner send you the completed title, insure and register the car, and then fly out with the new plates.

The question is what can MI do to aid you in getting the car to MA regardless of what MA does.

Who says?

A legal bill of sale is all you need to transfer a new purchase to your home state. You'll probably get pulled over, but with a legal bill of sale and an explanation, you'll be ok. Just don't expect to drive a second weekday in MA without getting in trouble!

Source: Have driven to Wisconsin, bought a car from a private party, drove back to Michigan without plates. A nice IL state cop confirmed what I knew already

Michigan doesn't have a DMV. The Secretary of State takes care of car licensing
