And his 5 year $145M contract extension starts in 2020.

Sale had a few outstanding outings this year, but overall I feel his subpar performance is a major reason why we are where we are. He was not helping the team, and I don't think him getting shut down for the rest of the season lessens our chances of making the playoffs.

Truth be told, I was probably more disappointed that Kacie "left" NESN.

Has everyone given up? It's not over yet. 5 games out of the 2nd wild card with 28 games remaining.

It has been over for a month. 5 games may in itself not seem like a lot but a wild card berth would also require TWO teams to flop these last few weeks. That is unlikely to happen.

This. If there was only one team ahead of them, I'd hold a sliver of hope. But for the Sox to go on a good run down the stretch and two teams to fail with so few games remaining? It's extremely unlikely.

I agree the chances aren't great, but the first wildcard is only 6.5 games ahead. If you're giving up down 5 games (and down 6.5 on hosting the game) with a month of baseball left, why even watch? This is when it gets interesting.

Many teams (including the Sox) have blown larger leads in less time. There's also a four-game series with TB coming up. If they can find their playoff gear now—and they have to—it's still possible.

Yep.

I couldn't agree more.

That's a huge IF. Every time this team has had an opening to pick up ground or momentum they have failed to capitalize. It is vexing as they are extremely talented. Perhaps if the gap were a bit closer and they hadn't coughed up so many leads...

I'm looking forward to football.

Did everyone see that annual New England sports poll from this week? The Red Sox have a low public perception even after winning a World Series; in fact, I think the poll indicates their perception last year at this time was much higher, before even winning a championship!

The Bruins, losing game 7 of the Cup on home ice, have a higher rating as far as team likeabity and supposed "interest in following regularly." Hard to believe even as a hockey fan here about the interest part, but a sports talk host mentioned it's likely due to too much commitment to follow baseball regularly vs. other sports.

Yet Red Sox hats and shirts always seem to rule here, still even more than the Patriots? Just a fashion statement, with a nice team logo and colors?

Are they still considered unlikeable -- or is it more for the GM and manager more than the players?

Plus, the Patriots are Super Bowl champs and their popularity in that poll was sky high above any other local team, as usual in recent times. Relatively few care about the Red Sox for now despite sellouts and near sellouts every game. And while tv ratings are down a bit, they're still decent.

But even last month, a local sports talk host was already pumped for football and had lost interest in the Red Sox after another disappointing stretch of theirs.

They cut a game off the distance to the top wildcard spot, so there are four teams fighting within a 5.5-game window. They're playing .700 ball over the last ten games while two teams ahead of them are playing .500 over the last ten. Small sample, but streaks right now can mean everything.

It's not time to give up. It's time to watch.
