Hello all,

Anyone else rent an apartment and use National Grid gas for heat ? Just got my first bill and it was $80 for 4 days of use..

I've had gas before and it was always pretty cheap. Although, it was through Eversource.

Is this a national grid thing ? (I've attached the bill) I have a hot air furnace and water heater. Everything else is electric.

I forgot to mention, I did call National Grid and inquire. They confirmed the previous tenants paid $250+ every month during the winter.

Seems outrageous for a 400 sq ft apartment, no?

That does sound very high for gas. If it was electric I would think it was normal.

Was that an actual meter reading or did they estimate? Guess you'll find out when you get your first full month. The highest my bill for a 2600SF house was around $300 in winter.

Is this apartment in a house or an apartment building?

It's technically a "condo" but I'm renting it. 6 units in a older house.

Faulty equipment/billing and or meter error? Or most likely paying for someone else's on top of mine ???

That sounds plausible, you might be paying for the entire building's heat, heh.

See if NG will tell you what the other units are averaging. See if you can view the meter and cut the heat to 50 and see how many therms it goes up.

My daughter rented an apartment in an older house, 2nd floor. She had a $500 monthly gas bill. There was no insulation above her apartment. All the heat went up to the attic.

Well, looking at your bill, they charge a -probably fixed fee- for "gas delivery" and "gas supply" even though you only had it for 4 days. Like a cable bill, where there are a ton of fixed up charges for just having it. It probably would be a lot more once you start using it.

They said the units on the first floor are "reasonable". Unit across from me pays less although it's allegedly in the same range. (I was told they cannot tell me the exact amount). There is 2 units that are empty.

Its a forced hot air unit. I have the thermostat set to 63 most days, and 55 when I'm at work for 8+ hours a day. Hot water heater is set at the normal heat setting.

I now have it set to 60 and 52 when I'm at work..lol. also going to turn down the water heater as the water gets pretty scalding hot anyways. I guess I'll have to wait to see what a entire month looks like.
