Has anyone ever gifted their car? I am going to give my car to my son.

I read information on the RMV website, but I still have questions, and I have been on hold for over an hour with the RMV 800#.

I think I need to:
- complete form MVU-26, which is the tax exemption form for gifting to immediate family member.
- complete the registration information on the back of the title, indicating 'GIFT' as selling price

Do I need to present these papers to the RMV in person, or will my son include them in his request for registration when he presents proof of insurance? Or will both of us need to be present?

If anyone can help, I would appreciate it.

If I have missed any important point, I would appreciate that help, too.

Thank you.

I've gifted several cars to my kids, but only one was registered again in Massachusetts.

I didn't go to the registry with my daughter, but sent her with the paperwork.

I know it's very important how the title is filled out. You will be signing it over to your son. Not sure if you write "Gift" or "0.00" for sale price - I can't remember. There are youtube videos that go over this. I also wrote out a bill of sale for her stating it was a gift.

You can also check with your local insurance agent as they will know.
