Are there any beaches that have a vibe comparable to Venice beach boardwalk in California? Crowds of locals and tourists, young people, freaks, innovators, eccentrics, music, art, and so on? Busy feel with exciting energy?

hmm. I would tend to say no but the reason being is because much of the coast is developed with towns. Maybe paragon park back in the day. I don't think anyone would really say Revere or Old Orchard Beach in Maine. Generally I would argue people want to be more private. Go to Block Island RI for example vs say cape cod. Maybe p town back in the day...

I'd also argue that if people are into recreation it by default in New England does not mean going to a beach. Hiking, fishing, rowing etc.

Not really. Up north, Hampton Beach sort of comes to mind, but isn't going to have the innovators/eccentrics/art part. PTown has a lot of these but the vibe is down the street, not on the beach.

You can't really expect a place with 5 months of beach weather (at best) to really compete with a place that has 12.

Venice Beach is completely developed and urban so I don't think that reason holds water.

Venice doesn't have amusements either (Santa Monica does have some.) Revere and Nantasket now, rather than back in the day, would be about as comparable as it gets in New England. Maybe especially during Revere's sand castle fest.

I think you're right. New England is a paradise for private coastal domicile. In Calif you can't own the beach at all and only a very few wealthy people get to live in places like Malibu where they can pretend they own the beach. In Massachusetts and Maine people really can own the beach.

Interesting idea. We have a lot of freshwater in New England which they mostly don't have in dry California...

I'd say the closest would be Hampton/Salisbury Beach in MA/NH. Then Old Orchard Beach in ME.

Short answer is no.

I will third Hampton Beach as your best best, but it's not all that close.

I agree...short answer = no.

Maybe you'd feel a little of the vibe on a late July weekend in P-Town.

No. Not really.

Revere, Natasket, and Hampton Beach are the closest.

Beach is really only usable 4 months a year.
