Huh? Hardly. I travel plenty and to be frank Boston is overhyped. The lovable loser mentality with sports died off years ago, the big dig is finished etc. Working class? Hardly. Boston doesn't have to prove anything anymore. It will never be as big as NYC and frankly it isn't that big of a city when you look across the country. Heck boston is about the population of nashville. Some act as if Boston is as big as Chicago or LA, it isn't even remotely close. Ok that's proper what about by metro? Again it isn't even in the top ten. Phoenix is bigger.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...tistical_areas

I harp on sustainability not on some left wing liberal thing but frankly the less people you have the harder it is for places and companies to take you seriously. Ever go to Burlington VT? It's a nice place, a great place and I'd love to go up there vacation. But it isn't a place to really live year round long term.

I know people that act as if there's such specific health care that they cannot fathom the idea of going somewhere else. Ok I get that but unless you have a very specific condition and that doctor is the only one that knows how to treat that and that's the only place where they practice that's a bit of a leap. I even met someone that didn't want to move simply because he thought you couldn't see red sox games out of the region

Of course there's academia but how long do you intend to go? If you are in your 30's or older sometimes I have to ask what are you doing? I look at everyone I graduated high school with, my undergrad and graduate school and frankly most left. I grew up with a woman who became a doctor and she's in Baltimore. I have a old friend that's a test pilot in the Navy (if we still had a shuttle program he'd be a top candidate for a astronaut) and he's near Seattle. My father and his and his worked in factories. By the time the mid 90's came they went to Mexico. There's hardly any manufacturing in Boston as the land prices can get higher value with homes. Military bases closed...nuclear power closed (Yankee Rose, Pilgrim and I'll even throw in Yankee in VT).

So we have what. Middle management and administrative jobs. That might be fine for government but these are the first to go in the private sector, especially if you can have people work remotely. Yes people work in the trades as well but it doesn't mean there's enough openings for everyone. The state hasn't even increased vocational schools in decades.

Boston doesn't represent all of the state though. I chime in about western mass and GeoffD chimes in about the south coast. Both are cheaper and have much less traffic.

Hard to say Boston isn't overhyped by Bostonians..it is. Nice city though but the appeal and interesting things (the ones it markets) are somewhat narrow city of it's stature. You can do all the cliche thibg in a weekend. And even then duckboats and cheers? Really? Fenway Park objectively sucks. History Trail, snooze. Seaport? Might as well go to a mall or an office Park.

Boston would be better served to sell it's actually 19th and 20th century local history more, and loosening up the Puritan restrictions that dim too much if the city’s culture. Interesting stuff in Boston from Eastie to Ctown to Hyde Park but it's all kinda hidden under a thick layer of Red Sox and foam Dunkin cups. Really tired and played out.

I think everywhere is hyped by their locals. Philadelphia hype is by far the worst.

Also don't know many people who think Fenway sucks? Idk if I've ever heard of that. Its not supposed to be this modern beauty? I'm not sure where your going with this post ...

Fenway has cramped seats, many obstructed views, and the most expensive food there is. And it should have more ways to get there conveniently. You've NEVER heard anyone say Fenway sucks? It definitely does.

Philadelphia is way downplayed and underrated by the locals-thats their shtick, Negadelphia...

I dont think Ive ever heard anyone say Fenway sucks? I actually don't think Ive met anyone who put Fenway outside their top 3 baseball stadiums. There are plenty to negate about Boston, including its sterilization (Which came with pretty much all new waves of development 2010-2019).. but Fenway is absolutely not one of them. My family and I (Kindof) have season tickets.

If you think Fenway is expensive (granted, its Boston location).. Oracle Park, Wrigley Field and Citi Field trump Fenway's prices. Its like $12 for a beer at CitiField. Its $9 at Fenway. Ive been to over 10 MLB stadius now and think Fenway was middle ground compared to the 10 ive been to, granted, ive been to the most expensive ones most likely (Yankee, Citi, Oracle, Wrigley, Dodger)... the two oddly cheap stadiums were Camden Yards (Baltimore) and Tropicana (Rays).

Again grass si not greener on the other side. Ive lived in ~5 states now... the pros of Boston are really strong. Complaining about little things like this just continues to make us look like classist m*ssholes. Is it my favorite city? No. Is it up there? Top 5 easily.

There are tradeoffs everywhere.

I'm 6'2". Fenway obstructed view grandstand seats are easily the worst seats in MLB. Box seats in the infield? Sure.

ditto. Complain what is here sucks. But when things change, complain they wish it was back to the way it was. Rinse, repeat.
Like bro, your state is #1 or top 5 in pretty much every good ranking. Enjoy it. If you go to the IL or NJ forum, people are so positive about whats happening and giving good recommendations. The MA forum is like 90% negative/complaining/whining lol

My neighbor used to say that. If everyone who complained moved out, maybe the rents would go down.

I mean there's legitimately a lot to complain about (and some often taken for granted assets like you say), but if anything I don't think anybody is harder on ourselves than we are.

Not by any meaningful metric.

And while I think Boston’s too expensive, I don’t believe it’s overhyped. If anything, on a national and international level I find that a lot of people don’t know much about the city outside of sports and the Revolutionary War.
