I was recently offered a job in Concord, MA and am looking for somewhere to live once I start. I will be moving by myself and preferably would be able to find a place for less than $1,000/month. I'd like a neighborhood with a low crime rate and a commute no longer than 30 minutes. I'm also not picky about how far I am from Boston - quite honestly, the further the better is ok with me so long as the above criteria are met. It's hard to get a feel for the area simply by looking at Google maps so any suggestions you have would be appreciated!
I used to live in Littleton, next to Acton/Concord. I do think you are unlikely to find anything in that budget range, even if you go west and further from Boston. Maybe the city of Lowell, although there is more crime there than in the suburban towns. Depends on where you're coming from, what you think of as "low crime." I'd live in Lowell if I had cause to move back to the area and such a budget. Really, I think you'll likely have to up your budget, regardless. Best wishes on your move. Concord is wonderful.
Are you willing to share an apartment/house or live alone only?
If you don't mind having a roommate I'm sure you can find a place in Concord, Arlington, Bedford etc.

I agree. I think OP is going to have a hard time if $1000 is the max. Even the crappy stuff nearby is over $1100 now.
There is no area with rents at or less than $1000 around Concord. One or two listings will pop up... Just take whatever you can get if you are committed to the job. If you don't want to be near Boston, all the better.
Concord is in an expensive area, in an expensive metro. Supply doesn't really open up until you're at $2000+, and even then, there won't be a lot to pick from.

Share. $1000$ is very cheap. I paid $1000 for a room in Boston 10 years ago, and that was already not on the very expensive side of things.
If you are lucky you may find someone that rents an in-law apartment.
Further from Boston prices are cheaper per sqft but you also don't really find small apartments and rentals are not that common. Maybe commuting from some of the larger cities could help finding a small apartment. Lowell, Framingham, Marlborough...but the 30 minutes will depend on where exactly the house is and where exactly the job is from these cities.
Ayer, Shirley, or Leominster might work for an apartment at that budget, though about a full 30 min away from Concord. The other option could be an apartment share closer to Concord.

Maybe not... I looked at Littleton Lyne in Ayer like 10ish years ago. Basic is the best way to describe it. Plus... it's Ayer.
Even their studios are apparently $1195.
