Not that it is anyone's damned business but I buy stuff, take it home and maybe find something better later or reconsider the item for whatever reason.

Why the F does it matter?

Sir, that kind of language is inappropriate.

I can't imagine taking the time to return a $7 item. Just keep it.

Then, I can't imagine taking the time to post a complaint about the return policy for my $7 item. Most people are probably delighted to get cash back.

I'd just use the money to buy coffee or whatever. Leave some as a tip. I wish my life was so charmed that this was a problem.

And frankly, I am not going to take the time to go to the bank to deposit 7 bucks. That is an inconvenience to me that is unnecessary and could have been avoided by just refunding the debit card. And with Covid. going to the bank or ATM is just another risk I want to avoid.

The money came out of my bank via debit card. there is no reason it should not go back the same way. And if Target, Walmart, Christmas Tree, Job Lot, Macys and most other stores can do it, why not Michaels?

No one has given me a plausible reason why this happened except possibly Robr2 who said they may not have wanted to pay a transaction fee on $7. If I was returning an item for $10, $20, $50, $100 would they have returned the funds to my debit card? And if that is the rule, then it should have been posted at the register and she should have pointed me to that rule.

But that still does not hold water when other stores will do it no matter the dollar value of the item.
Bad hair day and the cashier was a person who was on the clock.
If 6.99 not returned to you the way you spent them is such a big issue - life must be a breeze.

Tempest in a teapot OP. Michaels is a private business. So are those "other stores". They can choose a refund policy to suit themselves and just like you, they are free to decide how much of it comes down to inconvenience. Bet they're not getting as steamed up over $7 as you are. .

After I retired I got bored and went to work in the high tech department of a major office supplier. We had a 30 day, no questions asked return policy. We had a few strange customers but one was a fellow in his mid 30's. He would buy an expensive piece of high tech (lap top, printer, etc.) and always return it within the 30 days. We got wise to it and basically refused to sell anything to him. Some stores are tracking returns and when one person has to many, they will not sell to them and/or offer a different return policy.

Some women are notorious for buying an expensive outfit, wearing it once (like to an event), and then returning it.

Based on my professional experiences debit cards can be refunded, but the money does not return immediately. It depends on the individual's bank.
