This is a bit of a microcosm of the moment, isn't it?

I'm wondering what made the school's (mostly white) leadership that this was a good idea? Of course fried chicken by itself isn't inherently offensive, but it has been used as a derogatory stereotype for some time and it's surprising that nobody there took a moment to think "hey, considering our makeup, maybe this isn't the best optics." The intentions were presumably good, but this is what happens when the out of touch feel pressure to "do something" to make a show of how tuned in they are to the race/equity movement. Obviously it backfired here. And while it wouldn't normally be a big issue, the school is now going to trip over itself with grave apologies and "corrective actions."

I agree it probably wasn't a good idea to have done it in the first place because look what happened....would have been nice if people didn't blow this up but based on the press about it, it has blown up.

Once again on St patricks day no one is going to be offended if a cafeteria serves corned beef, cabbage and boiled potatoes. I have to admit that I'd rather eat fried chicken.

It just seems like they are making a mountain out of a mole hill, I mean of all things to get offended over...anybody who doesn't want their fried chicken is free to drop it off at my house.

I could be way off, but I have a hunch that this cafeteria worker is far more educated and informed on the evolution of black American cuisine than the two or three Xaverian kids flexing their woke creds.

It might have been seen as a "negative" stereotype at one point (ie. Aunt Jemima), but I think we are past that now.

Right, if it had been me making the decision in this climate I'd just say don't do it...however now that it's been done and the cat is out of the bag it's a good time to ask why is fried chicken seen as offensive to black people and does it really need to be this way?
