Except that none of those are on the T and getting to downtown from Arlington kinda sucks.

The obvious and simple answer is - Boston itself. Then Cambridge. Why the debate?

Because it's not obvious. There are places in Boston like West Roxbury that can take longer to get to major job centers than many parts of Newton and other close-in suburbs.

True. Living in Boston can be great if you're commuting to Boston and commuting outward you'll fight less traffic. The way the question was phrased it sounded like the OP didn't want to live downtown, but maybe I was reading into it too much.

It's a REALLY vague question and we weren't given much in the way of parmeters.

Specifically downtown. You have access to all the subway lines, commuter rail, 93 and 90 if you need to drive, and are within walking distance of a great number of jobs.

There are many reasons to not live in Boston or Cambridge. I don't have time to list them all right now.

I think most folks here are assuming this means downtown Boston, but there are plenty of other places in the GBL which offer plenty of employment opportunities.

There's a large tech belt north of town along I-95 stretching from Waltham to Peabody. I can spend my entire working career in this area and never set foot in downtown Boston. In fact, I immediately exclude any jobs that pop up with an office in Boston or the immediate surrounding area. Just not worth it to me IMHO and there are plenty of opportunities even with that exclusion

When one says "Boston area", or Boston Metro area, it has many different meanings to a lot of folks. I've traveled and met folks who have introduced themselves as being "From Boston", only to later find they live in Tewksbury.

WIth that said, i've also met plenty of folks who live in Boston, and commute to the outer burbs for employment. I did this for a short time living in E.Boston and commuting to Billerica.

Well, of course. I do the same. Greater Boston is far more identifiable to the rest of the world, then the names of any number of townie towns in our area.
