The only people in Massachusetts who think about counties are weather nerds and judges.

Are not the only county functions left in MA Courts and Jails? In SC county government is alive and well starting with schools.

Don't forgot the Registry of Deeds. I have to go to Dedham when I buy a house or get jury duty.

I guess I could have done Western, Central or Eastern but wanted to be more specific.

Geography nuts like me think about counties, too. I live in Hampshire County but grew up in Middlesex County.

There are other services organized along county lines. Geezer daily status check phone calls are done by the county sheriff’s office. They do more than run the jail and transport prisoners. Bristol County has an AG school with a bunch of county employees. I think that’s the biggest head count. There are AG schools in other counties.

Only Bristol, Norfolk, and Essex.
Smith Voke and Ag in Northampton is a public HS for Northampton, and tuition ag/Voke school for Hampshire county. i.e. city run, not county run.

Half of the counties in MA haven't existed as corporate entities for years. They are merely reference lines in maps.
