Where can a single woman move to in Mass. that is not yet retired? Need to be on the coast, with beautiful beaches, entertainment, library, culture, some nitelife, etc. Boston has too much snow in the winter. Cape Cod might not have enough to do. Which cities/towns?

In July/August of 2017, I'm looking at moving to the Cape.

I'm retired at 50. I don't need "things to do" as I stay home most of the time. I'm a hermit. I love the beach, feeding birds/squirrels/bunnies, quiet, and peace.

Any advice would be great. I am hearing Dennis and Yarmouth have drug problems and I want to stay far away from that. I did see bars on storefronts there, so that sounds about right.

I want a rental with air-conditioning (people say I don't need it, but I do) and accepting cats (with claw caps) for less than $1,000 a month. I don't need a lot of space at all.

I'm looking for a safe neighborhood for a single lady.

Any tips?

Um, look some place other than the cape? Air conditioning in a cheap place on the cape? Haven't seen it.

There is less business in the off season and outsiders seem to forget that this is a place that thrives on tourism. For us who aren't rich, it's very hard to get by and are often forced to move away from our homes and it's only getting worse.
I work with a good number of people who live just over the bridge. They've been priced out of the South Shore, including Plymouth. A couple of them live in the Wareham area.

They all take the backroads to/from work in the summer to avoid the traffic. Even then their commute to/from is roughly an hour or so each way, longer during the holiday weekends as others discover the back roads.

The biggest drawback I've ever known about living year round on the Cape is the traffic, especially in the summer. The isolation during the winter months traditionally is part of the "The Cape has an alcohol problem" (I remember hearing that as a kid). We have family who'd had a summer home in the Harwich area for many years and retired there. They couldn't wait to get out of there and ended up spending most of the winter closer to Boston before deciding to sell the Harwich property and move down to FL.

You won't avoid that anywhere, unfortunately. The Cape and Islands have always seen more than their share of it, it seems.

Can't you just put ACs in the windows, especially if the place is small?

Not all windows can accommodate a/c's as easily. My folks bought some energy efficient windows. Well I'm thinking the company is southern since there they are used to central air. Low and behold the sills do not accommodate a/c's as easily and it had to be jerry rigged up. My grandmother had encasement windows which are next to impossible to hook up a conventional a/c. Now there are portables but those are mostly for hospitals and have pretty low BTU levels (less than 15K)

I dont see anything wrong with moving to cape cod year round at all. I dont know that id want to do it though. I think it can get pretty desolate in the winter and there's a lot of drugs. I just wouldn't want to end up with drug addict neighbors but other than that i dont see how it would need to affect anyone if theyre not addicted.
