If I am a 19 year old, full-time student, working 20+ hours a week, and my own income limits are qualified, (but not my family's income), can I get food stamps even though my parents have claimed me as a dependent?
You have to get your parents to stop claiming you as a dependent of theirs. That means that they also can't claim you on their income tax forms as a dependent. You'll need a letter of emancipation with your application for food stamps. I believe that both you and your parents will have to sign that emancipation letter. It might be something that has to be presented to and signed off by a judge.
If you are a full time student then you should be either fed by your parents, fed by your school as a part of your tuition, or you need a loan.
I've never heard of students being on food stamps. That's sleazy.
I've had to use food stamps before... there is nothing shameful about it... IF and that's a big if... you truly need them. And I suspect you dont.
When I was 19-21 I was dirt poor, college student, living with 7 friends in a crappy apartment, and completely on my own. Even when 5 out of the 7 people I lived with lost their jobs, we still did not qualify for food stamps, even independent of each other.
Learn to budget, go to the food banks, volunteer at a co-op...pick up some creative Ramen Noodle recipes. You aren't going to qualify for food stamps in any state of this union unless you're 19, a college student, AND you have a child.
If you're 19 years old, a college student, and have no dependents, You do not need food stamps. You will not qualify for food stamps unless there are extreme extenuating circumstances such as being a ward of the state.
Doug1991 - Of course, as a full time student, your income limits would fall within the guidelines for food stamps! You aren't a full time regular worker, you are a full time student.
Why don't you have a meal plan with your college agenda? And the meal plan could be rolled into any student loan you take out. And what is it that you do for work? My suggestion is that you instead get a part time job in the food industry. If you worked at the cafeteria or for a restaurant or caterer, you would get a free meal with every shift you worked for them.
I have read your posts on other forums, Doug and it looks to me like you're trying to move to Florida to attend college, and get all the different social programs the state offers? Free cell phones paid for by the state? food stamps? Housing? What is wrong with the dorm and/or some roommates. It seems to me like you're in for a wake-up call.
Go to a state college, live in the dorm, get a part time job and learn to budget like everybody else, and you WONT have to use the stamps and aid.
