There was a huge fire in Maui yesterday that closed the main highway to Ka'anapali (and many resort hotels). Fortunately, we headed toward the airport early. After an hour of waiting, we turned around and went around the back side (NW) of the island. It took two hours and had a long stretch of 1 lane highway. It was actually spectacular. But I wonder if anyone else on CD was affected by the fire? Or knows what caused it or if it was put out?

"..anyone else on CD..."?

Not yet out. Cause not yet determined. Tradewinds aren't helping, we were hoping for rain but that's a stretch.

Yesterday Maui PD was letting folks OUT of Lahaina by going the back road, but not IN, unless you showed a drivers license with address in that area. The back road is windy and single lane, not good for larger crowds with anyone who doesn't really need to be on it, especially at night.

Some great photos on the Maui News website!

Here's what the Maui News has to say this morning. Sounds pretty grim. I wondered about all the haze today. ‘It’s not a pretty picture’ - Mauinews.com | News, Sports, Jobs, Visitor's Information - The Maui News

I am glad that you enjoyed the back side of Maui, it is beautiful! Where there many cars back there with you on the road? It is usually packed when there is a fire blocking the main hwy.
I work in Kahului and had a major asthma attack yesterday at work, very scary. Had to leave after 2 hours work and go home to use my medicines for asthma. Today I looked down the mountain, gauged my breathing abilities, and called in again for a second day. The valley is full of smoke and 2500 acres have burned so far. No control of the fire as far as I know yet.
So here I sit, with all my windows closed, at 3200 ft, fans on, and air scrubber running in the room with my computer. Stuck at home until the rain (hah) comes or the wind blows it away.
So all smokers, we are in a severe drought, the worst in 30 years, and please don't throw your cigarettes out of your car on the road. The wind pushes them right into the brush and voila! A new wildfire. I see people doing it every day, will they never learn.

I work for Maui County GIS. My coworker works with the firefighters so she was out there yesterday getting data to map the fire extent. My boss was taking her to the base camp and got stuck on a muddy cane road (irrigation overflow) so another GIS guy and I went and pulled him out with his big Tacoma which just barely managed to stay unstuck. So I got to take some pics...

There was a string of cars but moving well. We were only stopped once for about 3 minutes on a stretch of single lane. There were people on ATVs acting as signals. Are they always there??

I think we were ahead of the crowd since we turned around about an hour after the highway closed. We saw a Lowes truck do it and figured the driver must know something.

Everyone - Thanks for sharing links and photos. Our best wishes go out to Maui's kind people.

It was probably the Fire Dept or Police on ATVs.

Here are pics from today

Props for going around the top! Beautiful scenery, but the 1-lane section scared the crap out of me.

We were on a boat coming back to Lahaina when we saw the smoke. A family on the boat with us had a flight leaving in 2 hours. The captain told them they'd better book another night at the hotel.

winkosmosis, thanks for all the great photos! We never got up in the area during the fire, and enjoyed seeing what it looked like from close by.
