Aloha all,

I was reading through a car rental review and noticed someone going on about how the back side of Maui is a forbidden place to go. Just to be clear, when I say the back side of Maui. When I say back side, meaning the northwest side from Kaanapali to Wailuku. You know where the rental car companies tell you not to go? Well...this poster was saying it's dangerous, you'll get mugged, even possibly disappear lol. I wasn't quite sure if this was a joke or if this poster was serious. I was just wondering because my husband and I went around that way last year. It was an adventure to say the least, but we lived to tell about it .

Any thoughts?
Mahalo

the rental cars don't want you going there because it is remote, one narrow lane at times. it is a prime area for a car to get stuck or get scrapped by a car going the other way. I have never heard of people being mugged on that road

Yes, I know it is a treacherous road . But, no I didn't think there was much truth to the mugging thing. We had no problems at all when we took that drive. Just met up with some friendly people selling banana chips and coconuts

The only mugging going on out that way is the kid selling the banana nut bread in Kahakuloa..... I drove it for the first time in 2000, after having been first upon the scene of a fatal car crash tunnel side of Olowalu, and don't care to ever see it again.

Aloha

We had the same experience with a van and motorcycle crash in the tunnel. Scarey ride back to Wailea! Never want to do that again at night!
