Search for hostels if you want short-term while you look for a perm residence, there are a few on the Island on all sides, really, in Paia, Wailuku, Lahaina and even South Maui (Kihei area). I used a Hostel in Paia for 3 days while I looked for and secured a place. Also, cautiously, look through CraigsList. MauiNews has many but consider asking for price reduction from that publication. Lots of private owners w/rentals. You might consider going with a short-term lease for starters, month-to-month or even a six month lease till you find what suits you.

You may also want to take a look at vrbo.com. It's for vacationeers, but you can usually work a deal with the owner if you advise them that you're moving over, not just vacationing. Good luck.
