Compared to hotel and condo stays, there aren't that many beach camping options on Maui. Aside from Olawalu, there are a few county and state park options, and those have very limited stay permits. The beach and snorkeling at Olawalu are nice, it's only about 20 minutes from Lahainatown for supplies. The accommodations appear to be okay, but I wouldn't count on their being as sparkly as they look on the web site.

Best of luck.

I didn't know there were any accomodations at Olawalu... I've just seen a sign about camping permits, and some tents on the beach.

We haven't camped on Maui, just because we live here and are not impressed with the condition of the campsites here, nor the people who camp there. I wouldn't leave any of your items unattended, even in the tent. If you leave to go into town, I wouldn't trust that your items would be there when you return.

We have camped over on Lanaii, and LOVED it. If you want an absolutely fabulous camping site, take the ferry over and camp there. Gorgeous place, clean site, we left all our things with no problem as we went off for the day. Dolphins in the bay, bathrooms, beach shower, and even a Four Seasons next door in case you want to buy something or splurge on brunch. Take the FS shuttle into town and get an ice cream cone.

The ferry lets you bring aboard a big pile of whatever - just wheel it up and stack it on board.

The ferry ride adds to your cost, but I think it's well worth it.
