In general, is there much traffic congestion on Maui? The couple times I visited, traffic seemed very light island-wide, with the exception of moderate traffic near Lahaina, but I want to make sure before deciding to retire there. One of the reasons I'm selecting Maui is to avoid the soul crushing crowding of Los Angeles. I lived in Manoa Valley, Honolulu in the '70's but I understand Honolulu is almost as bad as Los Angeles now.

Nope - no real traffic congestion. Especially if your baseline is LA or Honolulu.

Came from LA myself and Maui's got nothing, unless there's road repair work going on. I don't frequent west maui much so can't comment on that. Dairy Road in Kahului can be a bit slow sometimes but can be avoided unless there's a need for something actually on Dairy. Intersection of Hana and Baldwin in Pa‘ia can get slow, but I'd say add 5 mins or so during busy times to get through those slow areas. Adding 5 mins to a drive time is nothing coming from LA : )

If a person's retired, they usually don't have to worry about traffic -- they simply drive during "off peak" hours. During "rush hour", it takes about 90 minutes to drive from Manhattan Beach to downtown L.A.; however, during "off peak" hours, the same drive takes about 35 minutes.

Don't forget about the tourists that stop in the middle of the highway to watch the whales swim by!

The biggest congestion would be Dairy Road in Kahului, where there are a lot of major traffic lights and all the box chain stores are. Once you get out of that road, you're fine. Any other congestion would be due to accident, road repair, rocks, or fire (or maybe the slow driver) -- not regular traffic.

That being said, there are more and more cars annually. Even with the recession, the population does not seem to have shrunk as one may think there would be economic flight out of Maui.

If you want to retire here, it will be nice to be here for now. Can't promise if it can avoid looking like Oahu in 10 yrs.
