Well, you have to look at what your son's interests are. Academically, Maui High is a better school. If your son is more interested in sports, Baldwin would be a better choice. Maui High School is the only high school in Hawaii that offers all 7 pathways: the Health pathway, Arts and Communication (video, graphics), IET (Robotics, programming), Public Human Services (culinary), Agriculture, Business, and Natural Resources. It also depends on where you're living. If you're living on Maui and live in Kihei or Kahului, that is Maui High's district. If you live in Wailuku, that is Baldwin's district. If you're planning to move to Maui or have your son stay with relatives, consider where he will be staying, because it might be easy or difficult to get to whichever school he'll be attending. But just because you live in those districts doesn't neccessarily mean you have to attend the school that the district is in. Maui High isn't scary, actually. It may have fights and people who are drawn to drugs, but that doesn't mean other schools don't have fights or drugs either.

King Kekaulike on list of challenging schools in the U.S.
April 28, 2013
By MELISSA TANJI - Staff Writer (mtanji@mauinews.com) , The Maui News
|
King Kekaulike High School has again made The Washington Post's list as one of the most academically challenging high schools in the nation.

The approximately 1,025-student public school was the only Maui County high school to be recognized in the "Challenge Index" released this month.

In the state rankings list, the Pukalani school was ninth out of the nine Hawaii public and private schools that made the cut. Topping the Hawaii list were the private Iolani and Punahou schools on Oahu.

Last year King Kekaulike also made the national index.

The Challenge Index identifies schools that have done the best job in persuading students to take college-level courses and tests and preparing their students for college.

"I'm very proud of this," said King Kekaulike Principal Susan Scofield on Saturday. "I'm really happy for the students and the teachers. It's really a validation of the effort they put in."
