I am thinking about moving to Maui in the next couple of months. I am a single new graduate RN in my mid twenties.
1. Are there any new grads jobs in Maui?
2. How about single young men? Young professionals preferably.
3. Would it be hard to travel to another island and back? For instance, if I found a job in Honolulu, but wanted to live on Maui.
4. I'm really into nature and sunshine. I could be outside all day and would love to take up scuba diving. That's pretty much guaranteed right
My other option is move to Austin, TX. Any opinions?
I will just reply to #4, Hawai'i is not even close to being a diving mecca. If you want sunshine, nature, single professionals, lots of nursing jobs, and GREAT warm water diving (and thousands and thousands of great dive buddies), I'd like to recommend Southeast Florida.
I have not been to Maui, so I really can't answer questions 1-3, but as lifelong divers and former dive professionals, my spouse and I moved here despite the lack of great diving, not because of it. Whereas we used to dive at least once a week but usually more, now we find ourselves only making the monthly club dive and then, just for the social aspects of it. We are planning a dive trip out of Hawai'i for later this year. The water here is REALLY cold for diving, a thick wetsuit and hood a must year-round...whereas you can dive in board shorts and a rashguard for much of the year in SoFla.
#1---realize there is only one hospital, with a small branch facility, on the whole island.
#3---flying between islands is about $150, occasional discounts, but requires the full TSA flight security stuff to go through.
I see, so then you plan to fly to Florida every weekend to dive? I think not! LOL
But seriously, if diving is very important to your lifestyle, Austin isn't going to cut it for you. Hawai'i won't either. Unless you love to dive in cold water, S. Florida is pretty much your only USA option. Of course, there are many options outside of the USA. There are lots of Caribbean and Pacific islands with warm clear water and lots of diving opportunities. Since you mentioned diving as being important to you in the future, Hawai'i is not the best choice and Austin...well I just can't think of any reasons to move there at all, diving or not.
Understandable. I would love to be able to dive whenever I want, but my career is also important and I need a place to start, hence Austin. I've heard it's a growing city, good for new grads. It would be easier to just live there and fly to a dive spot like FL and the Caribbean vs being so far away in Hawaii with limited diving. Unless the Caribbean is hiring nurses! Haven't looked into that.
Flying to Florida every weekend will make an enormous dent in your budget. And then there is the time factor going back and forth and remember, you cannot fly within 24 hours of diving. This means four days a week going to Florida, diving Florida, and returning, which leaves three days to work.
Methinks that for you, the diving is a mere afterthought and not actually important to your career decision.
