Maui Land & Pineapple Co., which owns the Kapalua Resort and is a major developer and ag company announced layoffs of 274 employees yesterday.
Kapalua Resort: 46
Corporate/Community Development: 24
Agriculture: 204
These layoffs represent over 25% of the ML&P workforce. And they are not their only recent layoffs. In 2007, they laid off 120 people in when they closed their remaining pineapple canning facility here, and 271 employees in 2006 when they closed down the Bay Hotel to redevelop it as interval ownership condos. (Not yet reopened and sales supposedly faltering.)
These are the sad realities for our neighbors and reflect the market realities of high fuel costs and decreasing tourism and real estate sales. The once-flourishing job market is tightening, and prices are going up, not stabilizing.
