Hi all,

Basically, I'm thinking of moving to Maui, specifically, near Lahaina, soon. My girlfriend moved over there a little bit ago and we've decided that i should join her. My biggest concern is finding work though. She had no issues since she's in the bar/restaurant industry, but I'm not. My experience has been in finance and more recently, engineering. I'm open to changing and finding something else, even if its sub par to what i'm doing now. I'm just worried that I won't be able to find anything, or at least nothing that will pay rent. Has anyone had an experience like this, where you went without having anything lined up? I can afford to live for a couple months without work, but past that is pushing it.
Thanks

lots of folks have come here without a job. sorry to say something so simple but it will either work out for you or it won't. we don't have a lot of jobs now but unless you come here and apply you will never get one. give it a go and see what happens

thanks. Yeah, that was the plan. Just a little nerve racking to give up a good job for the unknown. Oh well, if nothing else, it will be an adventure.

Why not take a leave of absence or use up your vacation and plan on applying and hopefully interviewing while you're here? I guess I think a bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush.

Yup, as Joliefille mentioned, try not to burn any bridges behind you. Can you get a "sabbatical" or a really extended vacation?

Finance and/or engineering? Those two fields generally aren't followed by the same person, but Maui doesn't have a whole lot of either. Although, you only need one (or perhaps two) job(s).

Lahaina is a tourist Hotspot, so if you willing to work in that type of field. i.e. Hotels, restaurants, activities then you shouldn't have a problem finding work. Other fields are a different story and I see that most positions are far and few in between. What kind of job where you looking for in engineering or finance? Maybe can point you in the right direction. :O)

Good 'ol craigslist will give you an idea of what's available. That's how I got my job on Oahu, and moved 4 months earlier than planned.
