What are some of the best beaches on Maui where my husband can learn to surf?

I'm assuming you're talking about taking lessons? I'd go somewhere close to where I was staying. Most resort beach areas have surf instruction vendors right there. You can just talk to them to make arrangements.

Having done this with several sets of our guests at Ka'anapali, I'd take a walk and look at a few vendors before I selected one. For your convenience, you might want to be sure the boards are stowed near where the instruction takes place. (One set of our guests had to haul their boards about 1/4 mile to and from on the beach. Fine BEFORE, but not much fun after.)

And you might want to pick a time that doesn't have many people already signed up or ask for individual instruction. If he's a first-timer, the more help you get (especially a good shove in the water) from the instructor can make the difference between getting up several times and only getting one or two good rides.

We don't have much surf in summer, so most surfable spots are "safe."

Best of luck.

The cove in Kihei, and the southwest coast from the tunnel to Lahaina.
