How does YouTube decide what to pull? What is "hate speech?" What is an "extreme view?" How exactly is that defined? This is a really bad idea.
Whatever they want. Many forums do this. I have had posts removed from forums and another person saying the same thing has theirs left alone. No rhyme or reason other than a mods personal opinion of what was posted.
More Nonsense from the NY Times. They absolutely do not cite any specifics. We all know they like to just make stuff up, like CNN.
It's fodder for the easily influenced I guess. I don't know why any critically thinking adult would give any credence to NY Times "reporting" these days.
SMH, quit calling everything fake news just because it is quoted by the NYT. It has been all over the news.
It is about time YouTube did this and I hope all other ban extremist videos and views. Hopefully C-D will follow suit.
We have plenty of hate to go around in this country. We do not need people, who are possibly mentally unhinged, posting garbage simply to incite more hate and maybe violence.
This stuff also promotes ignorance by using conspiracy theories and fake news.
We definitely are NOT in need of more ignorance in America.
Time to think of the beneficial good to society as a whole over the rights of a few extremists to vent their rage and/or attempt to influence thought.
They can do what they want, but I don't like the precedent being said by a lot of these companies essentially acting as biased publishers while simultaneously holding themselves out there as platforms (and thereby receiving certain legislative privilege(s)).
I'm disinclined to censor almost anything outside of child pornography and direct incitements to violence, as a rule of thumb. A foreseeable endgame to this 'thought police' nonsense that increasingly pervades social culture is that it will veer quickly into legislation and culminate in actual violence. Conversation or violence is one of the ultimatums we have to understand exists. When you remove the prospect of the former you by necessity leave only room for the latter. There MUST be a distinction between communication and physical force, or chaos will ensue.
YouTube announced plans on Wednesday to remove thousands of videos and channels that advocate for neo-Nazism, white supremacy and other bigoted ideologies in an attempt to clean up extremism and hate speech on the service. What about freedom of speech? Because YouTube is a private corporation, these videos are not protected under the First Amendment, so they can pull any videos they want. I support the right for people to be racists and bigots if they so insist upon it. But if a private entity pulls material like this, is it considered censorship?
they are a private entity....so no, it is not censorship (in 1st amendment mind set)
the question I have is how the select/enforce this..... what is an extreme view??
think about this you tube has a LOT of extreme views in general...
think about the college kids that made "loose change" which was an extremist view (false view IMO) of OUR GOVERNMENT being involved in 9/11
does that mean that videos promoting Extreme Islam...or the videos WARNING of extreme Islam will be pulled...there are always at least two sides of every story

I know, right? The New York Times has won 127 Pulitzer Prizes for all those lies they're constantly publishing And since you aren't convinced, here's confirmation of this "lie" from The Verge. Besides Waldo, I would think you'd really want to believe this since it makes conservatives out to be victims.

Yes it is. Unfortunately, I think in this day and age of social media and all the media channels, first amendment rights may have to be revisited. I am not sure what the answer is, but YouTube is a media company and I sort of feel should NOT have the right to censor, except for things that break laws. Media companies should probably be held to a different standard than other organizations.
I am against both government and corporate censorship, although only government censorship is a constitutional issue. Corporate censorship must be dealt with in a different way, and that is happening. Alternate platforms are popping up all over the place and some are beginning to see some success. As it turned out vertical near monopolies meant you couldn't just start your own platform because the whole technology chain created roadblocks working in unison. A whole new foundation is being built from the ground up though to deal with that. Big tech is proving to be as short minded as big government is in this case and in the long term may end up suffering for it. Ironically many of them are only seeing the present, and forgetting all about the lessons learned from myspace.

Good riddance. Not only political extremism but there’s a huge block of videos on YT promoting the sex trade in SE Asia. For those who are upset go peddle your garbage on some other venue. This is long overdue.
