We're a family of 5 moving to Memphis from NYC and we would love suggestions of neighborhoods to consider and an insight into private schools. We prefer historic homes to new construction. We don't need a huge lot (i.e. >= 1 acre) but we have a 12, 9 year old and a baby on the way so they need room to stretch their legs and we’d really like a pool. Neighborhoods that are full of other young families would be a huge plus. Also, we’d like to be located within walking or biking distance from a tennis court. We’d like to stay under 650k.

On the school front, our boys are currently in public school BUT they are in programs for the academically gifted which is why we're only interested in private school programs. Which private schools are known to be very academically rigorous?

Lastly, which team sports are popular among young children in Memphis? Our boys really love playing soccer and hope to continue when we move.

Welcome to the midsouth! We retired here 5 years ago from Staten Island. I can't help with Memphis locations nor with schools but I can help with other concerns.

Pizza, nothing like NY unless you're a fan of the Dominos/chains. BUT, the best BBQ. BTW, there's a reason you'll find hot sauce with the salt/pepper.

Having warned you about that, the people are welcoming, the airport is great, and there's little to no snow but don't leave your shovels back in NYC. We needed one this past winter. But winter is OVER! It's a short season, the snowfall is using not much more than a dusting; this year we had 2". Do learn about tornadoes and consider the flood plain if you wind up near the river.

Midtown and maybe parts of East Memphis are probably the only areas of the city the city that offer historical homes. I'm really stretching East Memphis having historical homes but it does have homes with nice size lots that were built in the 50-60's. Midtown does not have big lots as that is classical Memphis. Most of the rest of the city is fairly young as far as housing is concerned outside of the neighborhoods directly north and south of downtown and midtown but they are full of poverty.

Honestly from your what you wrote, the suburbs of Germantown and Collierville fits your needs and wants much better, minus the historical housing stock. As a bonus they both have excellent school system that ranks with the top school systems in the state. You very well may not have to consider private school.

5 kids? Unless you can afford private schools Collierville, Germantown or possibly Bartlett is where you want to be. Each town has historic homes, but the pickings are slim

Another New York transplant here. Key question: where will you be working?

Memphis is still a segregated city, for the most part, by both race and religion. If you're Jewish, then East Memphis is where you will find the synagogue, JCC, Jewish schools and Kosher foods. There are churches all over town, but they are either white or black, for the most part.

With a healthy budget, look at Central Gardens in Midtown. They are old homes, some on lots as large as 2 acres, although the biggest lots have recently been the subject of subdivision. You can find a lovely home on 1/2 acre for under $1 million. There are lots of private schools in Midtown. Look at Grace-St. Luke's (Episcopal), ICC (Catholic) Christ Methodist and, for your boys, Presbyterian, which is a bit further east. For girls, there is St. Mary's (Episcopal) and St. Agnes (Catholic). Out in Germantown, St. George's. Also look at Christian Brothers (Catholic), Lausanne, Harding and Memphis University School. In East Memphis there is a popular Catholic elementary school, St. Louis.

Here's a beauty in Central Gardens.

Of course schools all take children of different religions. If you would have an easy commute from Germantown or Collierville, then their public schools are the best in Tennessee and would make an easy choice. Memphis public schools are poorly rated, and getting a spot in the few good ones would be tough for someone moving in.

Walking distance to a tennis court would be this one Downtown, but not a big yard to play in.

NY Annie, have you tried Aldo's pizza? He's from New Jersey and makes a great pie. And (901), it's three kids, family of five.

We haven't tried Aldo's in Memphis - we get there about 4 times a year to the VA for appointments. When we first moved here, we took a friend to Memphis - she wanted to see the ducks but they weren't out for show that day. We had pretty darn good BBQ at some place near Elvis' home (across from a huge post office). It was really good but not worth all that driving.

Memphis is quite a trek for us and with all the extra animals, we'd have to put the dogs in boarding for the day - put pick up is early so it means overnight - and we still have to have someone come here to check on/feed the cats - twice in a day if I still have kittens around. (I rescue and foster.)

Thank you for all of this info! The third home you posted is exactly the style we had in mind!

My husband and I work from home so other than occasional trips back to New York, commuting isn't an issue. We're moving to Memphis to be closer to my in-laws who live in Tunica. Are there any strong secular private schools? I was raised Baptist and my husband was raised Presbyterian but we now both identify as agnostic and are not raising our children in any particular religious faith.

Lausanne in East Memphis is one of the top private schools in TN and I believe it’s secular.

Additionally, the optional program at White Station HS is good as well if you can get your kids into it.
