Hello All,

I am moving to Memphis in August for work and am currently looking for an apartment. I have been looking online and I think I want to live in the downtown area but I wanted to get some opinions from Memphis residents. I am looking for someplace safe to live but not boring. I have seen many nice looking apartments online for rent at the Claridge House.

I am planning on going up for a week or so in July to secure an apartment and begin the moving process. If any of you can give me your opinion of Downtown Memphis and The Claridge House that would be very helpful. If you can recommend any other places to live that are safe and not boring that please do so. Thank You.

Those turned condo a year or two ago. Do you mean rent a condo out from a private owner?

Yep. I have been looking on craigslist and have noticed a lot of condos for rent there.

It's sort of at the far end of downtown, not really near much. Lots of bums hang out at that end. Don't get me wrong, it's just a few blocks from "the action" of the rest of downtown. However, it's still a bit far off. That could be a good or bad thing. The building had a lot of tiny little units in it, which attract people with less money, which can lead to not-so-great people living there (which is what happened when it was apartments). I think you'd have to check it out yourself to see what you think.

That's what I've been reading. Thing is that im trying to pay $900 or less in rent and my biggest concern is being safe as I am going to have my girlfriend partially living with me there some weekends. I don't want to live to far from "the action" but if that is what it costs to be safe than so be it.

You can probably find a one bedroom apt on the island for under $900. It's a car ride to downtown, but it's close. A cheap cab ride for sure.
