Does anyone on here have anxiety? I got put on Buspar about 3 weeks ago and the meds can take up to 6 weeks to kick in. this past weekend I found out what "triggers" my anxiety (Being in cars with other ppl and eating at resteraunts) and since then I have been having panic attacks and short of breth, thinking about it all day long, etc. How do you deal with it? My GF has had anxiety in the past and is pretty much cured and she proimises that it will get better. I'm scared. anything will help.

I had anxiety,Paxil helped me over it and now Im tapering off it. What about a drug like Ativan to help with the attacks till the buspar works? It will help while waiting. I wish I could be of more help.

tonyman,
Behavior therapy can be a bigger tool than meds in situations such as these. You now fear certain situations because your body has a panic/anxiety reaction under those circumstances. Exposure therapy with baby steps will allow you to see that those situations don't pose a danger to you and you can change your body's reaction. By avoiding the situations or expecting the reactions the fear is being reinforced. Really just try baby steps with exposure and you will be able to relearn these places are safe.

You may need to find some reinforcing statements to use for self talk like "I am ok", "I am safe", "I can breathe through this and I will be fine".

You may also try to use a guided meditation cd a few times a week for relaxation. It may take practice at first so don't be stressed if it seems you can't relax while doing it for a while, it takes practice. You might also need to try a couple guided meditations to find one that you like. The value in it is to have time during the day to relax as well as to learn how to calm your body and stress reactions. It is very valuable with anxiety and panic because you will use it with your exposure therapy to relearn that you are safe and to reset the anxiety.

I have had anxiety and panic attacks since 1997 so I have tried just about everything except meds. I have ups and downs but a few things worked especially well in helping me.
