Hello. I have never been able to put a finger on exactly what is happening. Perhaps a mini anxiety attack? Sometimes in the morning when I know I am going to have a difficult day ahead, I wake up, and start coughing. I'll do it when I get out of bed, and sometimes when I'm out of the shower and getting dressed. Occasionally when I leave my apartment I'll cough some more. It reminds me of my father's cigarette cough, as if he was hacking up a lung. Thing is, I've never smoked a day in my life. Sometimes this happens on good days. The day I was going on vacation, although perhaps it was the "change" and having to fly (I hardly fly) and the change of pace leaving and visiting family members.
People can have odd physical reactions to stress and anxiety. I read an article recently about a woman who was going through major anxiety and depression. She threw up every time she brushed her teeth.
When I was going through a particularly stressful time, I'd wake up nearly everyday with a tooth ache. I was grinding my teeth so I wore a mouthguard at night to fix the problem. Maybe your stress is causing you to do something in your sleep that is in turn making you cough?
I'd get it checked out medically, even though it is probably just stress. Coughing can be a sign of a lung cancer/lung disease. If you smoked or your father smoked around you this increases your chance, but anyone can get lung cancer.
I don't mean to add to your anxiety by bringing up lung diseases. All signs point to stress and anxiety being the culprit, but it's good to be careful.
When I was about 12/13 I had a persistent "cough". Folks took me to an allergist who of course said I had allergies, and needed weekly shots. Did the shots for maybe a year?
Looking back, this was clearly related to stress or a form of OCD. I'm slightly OCD, nothing major at all.
I know this because I don't suffer from allergies, and the shots never really did anything
A general practice is to rule out organic causes before settling on a psychological cause. Why not see a doctor?
