I have had panic attacks for most of my life....the past couple of years I have just had this fear of wide open spaces...For me to go for a walk is hard..If I have my dog, I am pretty much OK...If I go into a big store like Costco etc..or even the grocery store I have to take a cart even if I only buy one item...to walk around freely makes me feel off balance and panicky.. Large Parking lots are another trigger....parking and walking through an empty lot terrifies me...it seems the older I get the worse I am getting..I do much better at night say driving then daytime because I can't tell how wide open it is... It is very debilitating to say the least...we went on a cruise and the ship docked in Cozumel and the dock was wide and no railings and it looked like it went on forever...I almost sat down on the middle of the thing!!! Has anyone felt this way and how do you cope the best?

You have Agoraphobia! I have known two women who have had this condition. It is treatable, and it usually results from some traumatic event in your youth.

Hi Doctor...yes..I have had it forever but not like this.....I have been housebound in my 20s and have been on meds to control the panic attacks but now I rarely have a panic episode but wide open spaces have really been giving me trouble...thanks for responding....

So have you been able to find a good therapist to help you with the condition?

I does get worse. I'm not sure why, but it does. I've always been a little afraid of heights. Now, I no longer want to fly and have developed a fear of elevators--I keep thinking of that hollow shaft, the long drop.

I'll fly if I have to, use an elevator when I must, but I don't like it.

Hi Gerania...escalators are worse for me..the big LOONG ones at the airport or casinos..if I am in a crowd I am ok on one but I have to have someone stand in back of me...just feel like I will fall back...flying doesn't bother me because I am not claustrophobic...our last flight I had the last seat the last row window seat...loved it..I don't have the fear of crowds..love NYC and walking around there but put me in the Mohave desert and I would freak...now we recently retired to Tennessee..the mountainous side and I feel like even driving on hills and winding roads is terrifying me...I have been avoiding it and thats not good..even the road to our house is uphill all the way and going down it you brake all the way..drop offs on each side..no guard rails..and I get panicky even thinking about going somewhere and driving downhill...some of the main roads are pretty steep and I have to conquer this fear and just get my butt out there and do it!!!!

Some people like wide open spaces so much they sing songs about it:

I'm glad that we don't have to travel together. Can you even imagine? You'd be freaking out over the wide open spaces and I'd be having a panic attack about the drop off or a long high bridge.
