My husband of 22 years has recently been diagnosed with ADD. Over our marriage we had often talked about how he often felt like something was "Mixed Up" internally. I used to always joke with him that he was 90% wonderfull and 10% dark. Well our family made a very stressfull decision to move across state so we could be closer to his work which kept him away half the month. I thought this would finally give him the inner peace he has been looking for. Well from the very first day we moved the ratios of 90% wonderful and 10% dark flipped. He was angry and ugly and looking for something to rage on. We started to see a counselor which helped at times but the craziness still went on. He completely turned his family's lives upside down in a strange town. After 6 months of this I was going to leave him and file for divorce ( and really meant it!) Our counselor thought there was a strong probability that he could have ADD. After talking with her and some friends with family members with ADD, I encouraged him to be tested. He did go in for testing (a written type test in which a long questionair in filled out) and the results came back as Classic ADD. When he came home from the counselors office that day he was very upset and questioned his judgement and thoughts through out his life. He did seek treatment from a medical doctor and has been on a new medication for approx. a month now. WOW, my husband is now 100% wonderful. All of the anxiety and clutter that went on in his head has been calmed down. He has finally found the inner peace he has always been searching for. Also he can now look back on his crazy behavior and realize how "OFF" his thinking was. I often get phone calls through out the day with "Remember 5 years ago when I was such an a$$, I was so wrong". ADD is not just a condition for hyperactive children. It is a frontal lobe brain disorder which can be treated with daily medication. I know there is a lot of controvercy with this subject (especially with children). However this diagnosis has been a God Send for my husband who can finally elliminate that 'Dark Side" and lead a happy and nonconfused life.

I also recommend a book called The Davinci Method (having nothing to do with the controversial Davinci book or movie) which you can order online. Just type it into search results, and do definitely order the book and let him read it. Much of the "problem" stems from his inability to channel and direct his feelings, ideas, thoughts, and energy in the RIGHT way - and trying to conform to "the norm" as is very difficult with this personality type. I think he will do better - and consequently everyone associated with him - will do better if he is not treated like he has a bad condition or disease. Many people out there have or have had "it" including Thomas Edison, Donald Trump, and Bill Gates, among other famous people - - people who learned how to use their personality to their advantage and for the GOOD rather than let it destroy them. Good luck, and hope you don't mind my two cents.

Thank You! I really appreciate your "two cents". I will definately try to get The Davinci Method. We have read the book Driven by Distraction which also gives a really good view on the all around issues and concerns of ADD. I also agree with you on treating the person with ADD as an individual who has a condition that can be treated succesfully with medication, they are not bad or damaged. I wish we had known more about ADD years before,I would urge anyone out there who has a loved one who seems a little "OFF" to just read about it and get educated, it's probably not ADD, but what if it is! If anyone out there has there "two cents" about this topic I would love to hear it!

My Two Cents

Your husband may have always had ADD or he has developed it over time.
I had it as a kid but was luckily never diagnosed. I say luckily because the "medicine " that is prescribed is much more dangerous that ADD.

When I was in Asia in the early 80s all of the people were taking panax ginseng like it was candy. I was told it keeps you young and viral and of course I ate some. After about a week of eating or drinking (ginseng) tea I discovered that I was able to focus on important things and even unimportant things. I didn't always feel like I was missing out on something going on elsewhere.
I was generally easier to deal with and life got better.

Through the years at certain times I stopped taking it. No money or doctor's orders etc.. I always felt it. My behavior at the times that I wasn't taking it was unpredictable and out of character, not to an extreme but not myself.

Panax (Chinese) Ginseng is used by people with heavy metals toxicity and chemical sensitivities to help get rid of the toxins from the body that may cause certain adverse brain activity. Mood swings, irritability, excessive mouth watering, head aches are some of the many early signs of heavy metals toxicity.

Also silver amalgam fillings (over 50% mercury) can leech out over time and mix with the bacteria in the mouth. This causes the element to change to Methyl mercury which is 100 times more lethal than organic mercury.
Methyl mercury can cause major damage to your organs as your body can only clear a certain amount and the rest gets stored in your kidneys, pancreas, liver, lungs, heart, gastrointestinal tract and the most damaging part, the brain.
ADD is one of the first signs of mercury poisoning. Some believe it it a mild form of autism which has also been attributed to mercury exposure.
Selenium and sulfur are important mineral supplements for removing Mercury from the body. These elements bind to the mercury in your blood stream and "escort" it out of the body in the forms of feces, urine, and sweat.

I hope this helps. P.M.me for more info if you think it would....... Dennis

P.S. Most fish contain a lot of mercury and consumption should be limited to once a month.

So many people have forms of ADD and go through life unaware or thinking it's something else. My son tried all the meds. We settled on all natural Attend (zero side effects) combined with a scheduled lifestyle and a high protien LOW sugar diet. He's doing soooooo much better! Luck 2 all!

(this is an innocent question, not accusatory)....
Coyote Blond - based on your son's response, do you think a lot of today's ADD children could be because of high sugar/convenience food?
I do have a 2 and 4 yr old...but often think I give too much JUNK. But, it's something to watch of when he's good vs. bad.....

It has a VERY VERY direct impact. Almost everything we eat contains sugar or a form of sugar. So to add junk ontop of it... ouch! It cannot be a coincidence that altering a child (or adults) sugar intake can have such a positive impact. We've all witnessed what handing a coke can do to a child! I had to research. ALOT! Here's some of our changes. No more sugary sodas & juices. Now we drink water, crystal lite or sugarfree powder mixes. (don't let the sugar alternatives frighten you. Sugars BAD and how do you think diabetics cook?),we do drink sugar free sodas. Cookies, ice cream, candies are sugar free. Breads are multi-grain (yum). DO high protein foods! It has BEEN PROVEN that an ADD child given a high protein breakfast performs as well as any other child in school. Snacks, peanuts, popcorn, pretzels, carrot sticks, fruit, cheese, mini pizzas. I try to stay above 3 grams of protein per item. He readily accepted the changes because I SAID SO! And because there's dozens of tastey alternatives! None of us eat that junk & feel awesome! If we do get too much sugar we feel crappy! I warn his friends parents he's ALLERGIC to sugar & will vomit. Stops them cold from sneaking him junk! LOL! ADD/ADHD specialists agree 100% with the lifestyle diet change.

Sugar substitutes ARE bad. Just google "aspartame dangers" and read.

Aspartame turns to formaldehyde in your body, a known carcinogen.

I've had ADHD my whole life! I used to take meds for it when I was a child, but stopped after a certain age. When I was in college I had such a hard time concentrating and I had to work 10 times harder than everyone else to be in the top 1/3 of my class. Prior to going to law school I went to my doctor and took those tests and found that I still had ADHD and I was prescribed meds so that I could focus. My experience has been that the meds made all the difference in the world for me! I was not only able to focus on my studies, but was able to spend extended (like 10-12 hours!) periods of time studying and doing homework/briefing cases. It truly was like all the confusion was gone and the fog was lifted. Now that I am beyond school, I don't take the meds on a daily basis. I take them when I have a project that requires my full concentration. The funny thing is, what I do for work requires a lot of concentration (I'm not working currently, but will be going back to work in a few months). I am also a profesional ballroom dancer and dancing requires a lot of concentration as well, but for some reason I have never had a problem focusing or concentrating on my dancing. Weird, huh?

I've already researched each substitute thanks. And one, aspartame is not the only substitute. Two, they readily admit you would need to take in the above average amount to possibly reap negative effects. Most people do not take in extreme amounts even when it's their only substitute. The most common side effect of aspartame used in large quanities was a headache. It's a sugar substitute not a meal. Chlorine found in drinking water is a carcinogen. There's poisons in hairdye. It's common sense.
