How much money to vacation in Mexico and where to go? (to buy, luxury)

My new boyfriend and I are planning on taking a trip to Mexico in the summer. We want to spend about three weeks there. I'm Mexican and used to go to Mexico all the time, but because I was young, have family there and had everything paid for, I really have no idea how much money would be ideal to take. I want to take my boyfriend to different places like Acapulco, and some other small popular tourist towns like Taxco, Tepoztlan, and a few other places. About how much money would be good for 2 people staying approximately 3 weeks?
By the way...I don't know many places in Mexico and I want my bf to leave with a good impression of Mexico and to have a really great time, so any suggestions of places to visit would be nice. He likes the outdoors and extreme sports, as do I. Thanks!
Pretty broad question. The touristy places like Cancun/Cozumel, Cabo etc. are more expensive. The other parts like Mexico City are generally less expensive. But of course, this depends on where you stay and what you do. For hotel rates etc. check out some travel sites like sidestep.com

it depends on the type of vacations that you want to take, there are places for all the budgets, but to pass it well I would recommend about 800 dollars per week.

It can be very little -- a few dollars a day to many dollars a day depending on the kind of hotel you would be staying in, how many meals you would be eating out and where. Also what you would use for transportation and what kinds of things you would be wanting to see and do. If you travel by bus there is a wide range of prices for tickets depending on how much luxury you want to buy.
If you are planning on going in the summer, I would stick to the inland and higher-up locations. I lived outside of Mazatlan for three years and the summers were very hot. I personally would go to San Miguel de Allende. I loved that place. For big city and culture, Guadalajara is a great destination. I also loved Oaxaca but it does get a bit warmer there in the summer. I toured Mexico in the summer three years ago and had a blast but I stayed in the areas where highs were in the 70s-80s, except for my return to Mazatlan---as hot as I remember it. For money, my rule was 50 bucks a day for one person and I came home with unspent cash.
