Guess as a former Canadian if I want to vacation in Canada I have to learn FRENCH....relatives never told me about that.
Now if a person wants to visit Mexico they can just Google up any question for info on location and the whats whats for a answer. Learning how to say the basics like Hello, Thank you, count local money, tell time etc will go a long ways.

I have travelled to many places where I don't speak the language ... but I clearly am being a bit lazy about this. I have been looking up things too. I like a mix of both as it can help guide which direction I take.
I am trying to get the dates for dias de los muertos sorted out. If my flight leaves Oaxaca city on the day of Nov 2nd am I going to miss dias de los muertos? Of is it celebrated on the night of Nov 1s until the morning of Nov 2nd? If there were prades or events when would they be held? This sounds a bit crazy .. but I have a cencert I want to go to on Nov 2nd at 8 pm in my city. So I was hoping I could leave to head back home in the morning/afternoon and still make the concert !
Thanks for all the feedback and ideas. It has made me realize that I have NO idea where Oaxaca is and where I am suppose to be going in Oaxaca to check out the best Dias de los muertos events. I failed to realize that Oaxaca was more like a province/state then just a city. If I was going to Oaxaca anyone have any ideas as to which part of the area I should be going to be see the best stuff for Dias de los muertos?
Yes Oaxaca is quite a distinct place. This is no Cancun- indigenous culture, cuisine, pride, etc...is deep rooted in Oaxaca. Along with this comes a strong culture of resistance and demands for civil rights, including protests. Oaxacans are very proud people bit have also dealt with alot of racism and poverty. Don't venture out into rural towns if uninvited.
If you are in Oaxaca city, visit the large markets, ruins and tourist attractions nearby, for sure you should be able to see DÃa de los Muertos cultural demonstrations. If possible, also sneak in a few days to visit the beach, Puerto Escondido.
Cancún: Drunk Americans that only leave the resort to club or eat at an American chain restaurant
Mayan Riviera: People that never leave the resort except for going to XCaret or some other park or archeological site.
Playa del Carmen: People that leave the resort from time to time (may not be staying in a resort at all), has tons of local restaurants (though chains have been opening right, left and center), bars, a nice pedestrian street and a more townsy vibe.

Really? Okay I was with 2 friends and in my early 20s when I went. I have a good time. The beaches were nice, the night clubs were amazing, the bars seems really American ( ex just like from the spring break movies... I am Canadian and was travelling with a Costa Rican so it was new to us lol ), the day trips were good... it was a Mexican Disney Land lol ! However, I try not to go to the same place twice unless there is something major drawing back ex Florida ( Calle Ocho, lost of different because, amazing shopping, lots and lots of different things to do, safe and easy to get to).
So I am just about to sell my concert ticket for Nov 2 ( asile seat, centre stage ... 7 rows from the stage.... my heart is breaking a little )... so I HAVE to go somewhere now or I will just die! If the deal goes threw ... I will be booking my mid next week the latest.
SO based on what I have read so far Oxaca city is where I want to stay for dias de los muertos? From what I am reading too the drive from Oxaca city to the beach does not seem like a nice trip? Can I fly between these 2 places?
I am thinking of trying to see if I could fly from Mexico City ( do a couple days there) then to beach .. then to Oxaca city for for dias de los muertos?
Just curious how unsafe do you think it would be I went to this concert alone? Is the area around Auditorio Nacional pretty safe?
Safest area in the city. Super convenient for using the subway too.
