According to gringos, Ajijic is a great place to live, a paradise.
What do Mexicans think of it? I know the cost of living there is higher than a typical Mexican city. Is there any other downside? Is there any better city to recommend?
I live in Ajijic now and lived here full-time previously between 2008-2012.
I live in the village, not in an isolated gringo gated enclave.
My full-time neighbors are contractors, laborers, and a small pet store owner. They are very happy for the work created for them by expats. Do they say something differently behind my back...quien sabe?
My part-time neighbors are weekenders from Guadalajara. They are professionals...2 are doctors (one is my partner's cardiologist), an architect, a mechanical engineer and a DDS. Tapatios (what people from Guadalajara proudly call themselves) discovered the Lake long before expats. Most of these families have had Lake homes for generations. From Friday night to Monday morning, it is one BIG noisy party for these weekenders. They tell me they appreciate the ethnic restaurants in the village; we now have Thai, Vietnamese, Italian, Polish, Argentine, French). We are close to 2 of these families and they have all sent (or plan to send) their children to college in the US. Their kids go to private schools in Guadalajara where English is a mandatory course. These middle class weekenders think expats pay too much for services (household help, contractors) and drive up prices for them. But honestly, these professionals are vastly more wealthy than most expats here. They just like a bargain.
In summer, the wives and kids of these professionals stay at their lake houses full-time with their husbands visiting them for long weekends, until schools start again.
We are very conscious of our status in Mexico regarding politics so we avoid that topic with our neighbors, though we all laugh about trump and his wall.

Walls are no laughing matter. And contrary to media opinion, they were/are quite efficient in deterring-for a while at least- unwanted movements of armies (Great China Wall) , fleeing people (Berlin Wall/ IronCurtain), or terrorists ( Israeli-Palestinian wall) . Walls are political tools, sometimes unavoidable. The US-Mexican wall -already partially built , long before Trump- helps deter the illegals (not so much Mexicans now as Central Americans and even people from the Middle East/ Africa) sneaking into the US. I am probably a monster, but I think it is a necessary measure to protect your country (I'm not American myself).
Bridges ...walls....just look arund you, they are ubiquitous everywhere. So your slogan is meaningless .
Pigeon hole-why even post here when your comment is so off topic. You are trolling, move on.
