There are flights to Cancun from Newcastle, Birmingham, Manchester, Nottingham, Bristol as well as London. The progression of the exchange rate over the last decade plus the lower cost of airfare has made coming to Mexico for a beach holiday much cheaper than the traditional stomping ground in Costa del Sol in Spain and the Algarve in Portugal.
Cancun is also more varied than Jamaica, Belize, Barbados, Bahamas, Bermuda, Antigua and Barbuda, or the other former British colonies
So while Madrid and Barcelona have nonstop flights to Cancun, they are overwhelmed by the number of charters from Britain.
Also Aeromexico is now 49% owned by Delta Airlines who is very tight partners with Air France and KLM. Delta flies to Paris and Amsterdam from every hub plus some new cities like Orlando which is not a Delta hub.
Air traffic strictly from Mexico City (and not the entire country)(includes traffic in both directions)
680,103 Madrid, Spain Aeroméxico, Iberia
484,935 Paris-Charles de Gaulle, France Aeroméxico, Air France
307,348 Amsterdam, Netherlands Aeroméxico, KLM
277,568 London-Heathrow, UK Aeroméxico, British Airways
222,928 Frankfurt, Germany Lufthansa
Delta is hoping to increase the transfer traffic on Aeromexico to South America. Panama City is more centrally located, and COPA (allied with United Airlines) can fly almost every airport in North and South America with a fleet entirely composed of inexpensive Boeing 737s. From Mexico City AeroMexico can easily reach Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela and Peru on a single aisle jet, but they must use their Dreamliners to fly to Santiago, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, and Sao Paulo.
