I am just curious about Mexicali because I was reading about the very large Chinese population at one time. I always find stories about these communities fascinating. I understand that at one time it was quite thriving, but during some periods of trials and tribulations many fled (or were killed?) Now though there is still a relatively robust Chinese community there.
So does anyone know anything about the past or present Chinese community in Mexicali? Is it fairly assimilated now? TIA!
Not very visible from what I saw. I actually went there once, but only hung around the border because I could not drive through. No mexican car insurance.
I see a few chinese restaurants, and that is it. Maybe there is a more visible community further into the interior though.
it is a very closed community in Mexico, its hard to tell how they are.
I can imagine they are. Cities is on the border where apparently the cartels like to roam around. The politics are seemingly very corrupt. There was a nasty massacre of chinese a few decades ago, and then an exclusion act. Basically Mexico is a narco state with a history of violence against the chinese.
Relations obviously improving though. Apparently the CCP is working with some vigilante groups to extract resources. Cartels, and Triads now work together in the international drug trade. And that is amongst the normal relations between China/Taiwan and Mexico.
