You know how much work it would take to move all the Chinese people to Mexico and all the Mexican people to China? Then you'd have to change all the signs and stuff in both countries...

Oh, that's not what you meant. Never mind.

Drug trade won't go away since drugs are a source of income for the black budget. A black budget isn't subject to public debate, legislation for appropriations, and external oversight.

Drug trade managed by US government

Hit squads display very similar tactics to those used by Sunni militias in the Middle East. It's no accident. Some received training in the US at the School of the Americas which has since been renamed.

Even if more plants move there, they will still be Asian or American brands that are made there. The intellectual property for the product and the manufacturing process will reside in the country of origin. Their market just isn't large enough to compete with China.

An iphone cartel would be better than a drug cartel.
I know it's a tongue in cheek post, but China's secret isn't all based on being a centrally planned economy, cheap labor, and innovation....but on mercantilism. They make money from unfair trade practices - tarrifs, protectionism, stealing and copying technology, local and regional monopolies. That's there real secret. Forget about communism, they are a mercantile nation.

One reason that won't work is because China also has a regional hegemony based on size alone, the economy is huge, although they are trying to project outside of China as well. They also have a military to back it up. Mexico, besides all the other differences, is within the US hegemony. Unfair trade practices (and Mexico is already given an advantage to some degree) would be shut down real quick.

Now that tariffs are again a thing, we can expect mercantilist policies to trigger protectionism in other countries.

Surely you recall, that that was tried, and didn't really work out. The rare excepts, are auto manufacturing plants located in the heart of Mexico, away from the border. According to reports, those have boosted workers into the middle class, and have been a win-win all around. But Mexico didn't hold up its part of the bargain in NAFTA, which was--to improve infrastructure, to serve US factories in the interior. So manufacturers bailed on the original plan, except for a few who did get the infrastructure they needed, and clustered around the border.

China's wages are much lower than Mexico's, but OTOH, the viability of Asian-based manufacturing for the US depends on the price of fuel at any given time, which affects the cost of shipping. At some point, Mexico might become more viable.
