Mexican homicides jump 47 pct.; 1,378 die in '08 - Yahoo! News (broken link)

I've kept tabs on these type of stories for the past couple of years. And honestly I think this type of violence is just going to get worse. And is really going to spread to the American southwest in the big way. Granted I not on the ground there. Anybody see this violence spill over in a major way? is my assumption right?

Don't they have extremely tough gun laws? I thought that made the place safe.

I was reading an article in the Albuquerque paper the other day and it was talking about the border violence and mentioned that Juarez has over 200 murders so far this year and that this town of 8,000 people called Palomas just over the New Mexico border has had over 40 murders so far this year.

I live within sight of the border, and this violence hasn't spilled over. And I don't think its likely to. The cartels aren't stupid - they are operate like this only in places where law enforcement is weak and compromised.

I am disappointed, and suprised, that the military build up in Juarez has had very little impact on crime there. While I am cynical about Mexican institutions, I did think the military presence would quiet things down enough for appearances' sake.

The one impact it is having is on cross-border business. A lot of decent people in Juarez, Palomas, Nuevo Leon, and Tijuana are hurting because their shops, restaurants, clinics, or hotels are lacking tourist and cross-border business. The days when bus loads of Americans - and richer Mexicans from the interior - would wander the streets and shop are gone. Believe it or not, many Mexicans actually want to stay in Mexico and make a living, but if those businesses fail due to a lack of customers, where do they go?

1400 murders in a country of 100 million+? Pretty small number compared to almost any large American city. Especially when the drug cartels are responsible for a pretty high percentage of the number.

The number of homicides are related to organized crime, mostly executions...
