That's a little confusing since ForeignPolicy.com lists Miami as the 54th wealthiest city in the world...

that list ranks prob the metro, or the amount of of people earning a high amount of money to the population percentage and what not, there is very little middle class in miami proper, you have families of 10 living in 900sqft 2-3 bedroom houses/apartments in every part of the city

cause there are 3 miamis. Miami bashers love to quote city of Miami stats only.

1. City of Miami: has about 450k people and it's mostly older immigrants whose only income is their SSI check which is like $629 dollars a month. They get food stamps, plan 8(section8) etc

2. Miami dade county: The real Miami. Has about 2 million people.

3. South Florida metro: includes Miami dade broward and palm beach county. Has over 5 million people.

Miami is not poor. Its very urbanized. When I visited my friends in North Carolina I was like "Ohh geezz.. This is a forest" the popular spot to hang out with friends was Walmart's parking lot.

Miami is very urbanized and the average cost of a home must be over 200k. The city is not poor at all, I would say rich.

It is possible to be urban and poor. If you live in a shack with bad plumbing and a leaky roof you are poor, it doesn't matter if it's worth $20k or $200k.
