People talked about this in another thread, so I was thinking...

How do you guys feel about incorporating Kendall as an independent City?

That is, incorporating possibly Kendall itself (East Kendall plus the area between Don Shula and the Tpke), Sunset and the Glenvar Heights CDPs. Or also these areas plus other parts more to the west. Or the whole greater Kendall/West Kendall area and its respective CDPs/neighborhoods. Or else, but similarly, possibly.

The last City (or the Town, technically) in Miami-Dade was Cutler Bay: the people there decided to incorporate in 2005. They took the municipal charter and renamed the Town as Cutler Bay (formerly better known as the Cutler Ridge neighborhood).

No more cities, who can afford the taxes and extra hassles?

Dade County is gonna have to start allowing more incorporations, no choice.

West Kendall is starting to get serious about it.

Could there soon be a city of West Kendall?

I agree with tallrick on this one.

No one has really argued in favor of the advantages, what would they be concretely?

The wider Kendall area has no cohesive identity, cultural, historical or otherwise, as say Coral Gables, and there is no compelling issue on the table right now.

Maybe if it were broken down into smaller pieces, maybe, offering local residents greater control over things like schools.

Depends how the city is managed. Aventura has the lowest property taxes among incorporated areas of Miami-Dade. Since incorporating in 1995, they have managed to build a government center, splash pad at Pioneer Park, a dog park, a elementary/middle school and community center, performing arts center, as well as traffic and pedestrian improvements. You go down the road to city hall when you need permits or something, not some far flung office downtown or at the other end of the County.

The identity crisis of most of South Florida is easily fixed with incorporation.

Key Biscayne, Miami Lakes, Aventura, Pinecrest, Palmetto Bay, Doral, Miami Gardens and Cutler Bay are the newbies, I think the general consensus has been good, no?

Independent city means higher taxes. Take for example Doral, Doralian homeowners pay an average of $8,000 in taxes/yearly.

Someone told me a few weeks ago the county commissioners are considering lifting the moratorium on incorporation of cities. I hope this is true because places like Cutler Bay that incorporated have seen benefits of it. Kendall would benefit from it too.

While we are on this topic, lets talk about Country Club. Country Club lies north of Miami Lakes and west of Miami Gardens. Yet when i receive my mail, they always say Hialeah. Country Club needs to be the next incorporated City. And North Palm Springs should join them too. Then all of NW dade would be incorporated.

The problem with incorporating is the duplicity of taxes, city and county.
