He sits down and introduces himself. Either he talks all about sex the entire time or he talks about himself and his job all the time or there is incredibly uneasy silence.
And you still have 45 minutes to go until you friend calls with her fake emergency. Sigh....man you can't wait to get out of this!

You sit down at the table with the person and you have anywhere from 3 to 10 minutes...or something like that, to talk and get to know a few things about the person. You will either already decide you do not want to see that person again, no loss, it's speed dating and we didn't really spend a whole lot of time and money on the person, OR, you think, "Wowzers!" and you get their digits for later.
You can have multiple, "dates" in one night in the matter of an hour and either go home empty but having weeded out another 20 guys and no longer wonder about them or you can go home with a phone number or two and actually look forward to the date and have a great time. Until, of course, they stop being nice and start being real. Heehee.

I haven't tried it, but I've heard it's not so bad... Same thoughts in general as gatorm, but as a guy, I hate to have to sit in a date for an hour, when 5 minutes into the date I know she's not all that, her pics don't match, or she's 20 pounds heavier than the pics (women are notorious for doing this), so speed dating might be something I try in the future.
