I would rather have it stay the way it is than become a fake sin city streetcorner. Casinos right now are restricted to tribal land and existing pari-mutuel facilities like horse tracks, etc. Case in point, Hialeah race track which should have a casino, although I object to changing the historic buildings to do it. South Florida already has several casinos, and I agree with the above posting that if this beehive of corruption approves this white elephant eyesore to have a casino, there should be legislation for any hotel to have a casino. Why not have a casino at the fontainebleau or the Eden Roc, or at the inter-continental hotel? Of course not. This abomination depends on selective legislation to give it an advantage over other facilities. If gambling is such an economic boost lets allow it everywhere and make Miami the better version of Las Vegas. However, be prepared to host a whole new set of problems.
We do not want to be Vegas and we do not want to be seen as only a gambling city that is why we have to be selective. I think the fountainblue should get a casino also, they even have spaced already saved out for it. But Miami Beach being the anti-growth city it is seems like it wont allow casinos on its city so thats Miami Beache's problem. I think a select few is the way to go, companies and locations which have proven themselves those are the types of people we need making any Casinos in this city. Genting has/is dooing it all over the world.

Newspapers all over the country are failing due to the internet, and I think we can all agree the Herald is a pretty poor paper. People keep saying this low paying job agrument which honestly makes no sense at all. So what is better no jobs? Or low paying service jobs. If I am sitting at home with no job I would like to have some type of job. I rather have 10,000 new low paying jobs, 2,000 new higher paying jobs than ZERO no jobs.

In some things it is already true. But for overall city it will take a lot of time, a lot of work, smart developers and even smarter polticians. Remember those cities have hundreds of years of history ahead of Miami.

The casino will provide for many low wage jobs, but will also provide good wage jobs for people managing those low wage workers. Plus a person has to add in the multiplier effect of those jobs and the income.

There is not going to be one magical industry that will provide a full employment rate, and it is not good to have such a goal either.

I am not a casino goer, but I do not think anything is wrong with them. I remember when they were making a big deal out of building Foxwoods, and the area did not collapse in crime because of it, the place is actually a good attraction.

I believe Miami Beach voted gambling out for years for the fact it would bring more crime whereby they would have to add on their police force as this would be an extra cost factor.

GENTLING is willing to invest regardless of whether they get a casino license or not. They own all of the Herald parking lots now & are willing to spend $3 billion to develop the 31 acres and now in addition they have bought property west of Biscayne Blvd north of the Performing Arts center to provide them & their property parking.
In case some of you didn't know it GENTLING owns nearly 50% of NCL/ Norweigan Cruise Lines so they have a vested interest in Miami. I do have reservations about this project but how many cities in the US would be drooling over having a $3 billion dollar investment?
