Hi all,

I will be starting a new job in the Coral Gables area. I checked out the demographics and I may not fit.
I'm an African American woman in my late 30's.

I'm looking for an apartment in a clean and safe area. I can afford to pay about $1,000 for rent.

I really want to relocate from NYC, but is afraid that this place will not be a good fit for me.

I don't need to be at a bar, but arts and entertainment.

I currently live in New York and will be relocating in the Fall 2012.

Does anyone have any recommedations?

Stay in NY. Sounds like you like culture and intellectualism. NY is a great place to see art. Miami is a great place to see thongs. If you're looking for half naked people drunk off their a$$ looking to score then Miami is the place. If you want theater, go to Times Sq.

No one can tell you if Miami is the right fit for someone. The only way you will know is if you move here. That said, if you don't like it you can always move some place else at the end of your lease.

Coral Gables is one of the nicest areas in Miami so you will be working in a nice area. $1,000 a month on rent is dueable. Remember you will need to get a car when you move here along with car insurance (South Florida has one of the highest rates in the country fyi), so factor that into your budget if you haven't already. Renters insurance always good to have just incase a hurricane or something else happens to the building you are renting. Miami's arts scene is pretty good (its not NYC), we have the design district downtown, more and more art events happening year round. What Miami is missing is a great art museum however.

Check into the area in Cocunut Grove, Tigertail, SW22 ave around there. I lived in this area some years back and is was really nice. Don't know if it has changed or if the retals are high.

A new art museum is coming soon. But Miami does have a very good amount of art festivals and a very active and quickly growing art scence. There are plenty of more cultural things to do too. Are you talking about the demographics of Coral Gables?

You don't need to live in Coral Gables to work there you could live in Downtown, or other parts of the city. $1,000 a month wont get you much but you could find a small place in a nice area. Miami prices are nothing like NYC, much much cheaper.

I don't think you'll have an issue living in Coral Gables as long as you get along with other races and cultures. Coral Gables is one the most upscale areas in Miami Dade and there are many social activities you can enjoy there in the Commercial areas. I owrked ther for 3 years and found everyone very nice without the attitudes you find in places like Aventura and Miami Beach. Its also a more family friendly city and the crime rate is quite low. You may wish to visit it before moving though.

Good luck!!

Joe
