I vote for the Belle Island. It's in the perfect location and is NOT in the middle of the party scene. It's ultra convenient by car, foot, bike and bus to the practical stuff in SouthBeach (stores, banks, movies, etc.) and is a very relaxing and short drive to DT. It can't be beat. Oh...I live on Belle Island. I am middle aged with no kids and have not grown tired of it at all. Keep it on the list. You won't be sorry.

I would say start where your job is... Try to make it to work in 10-15 minutes or less. Usually areas leading to or at the beach are good areas so any area with a $4000 a month to spend is a really nice place! You probably get into a $600k-1.5 home or penthouse with that amount....

Saying Pompano Beach is in Fort Lauderdale is a little off base. Although it is the next city to the north and borders Fort Lauderdale, it takes an extra 20-30 minutes to commute from Pompano to Miami versus commuting from downtown Fort Lauderdale. The Harbor Bay area of Fort Lauderdale located off of the 17th Street Causeway is a good location because it only takes 5 minutes to get to 595 which quickly gets you to 95. From Pompano Beach, you can spend 15-20 minutes in stop and go traffic just getting between your home and 95. Then you've got an extra 10 miles of commuting on 95.

I am not sure if this is even possible...I really like Key Biscayne, but it seems so expensive. Is it possible to get a decent condo there for $400-$450K? And is traffic really bad going across the Rickenbacker?

Key Biscayne is expensive, but not *that* expensive. Based on a quick search on realtor.com, you should be able to find a nice 2br for under $500k.

Regarding the causeway traffic, it is really only an issue when they have construction and triathlon events on some weekend mornings, and during the Sony Erickson weeks you'll feel like you're stuck on the island. Still, there is some congestion in Key Biscayne itself. It could take 10-15 minutes to get to the mainland. There is a large cycling community that uses the Causeway, with much animosity between the cyclists and motorists. There has been some talk of reducing the speed limit from 45 to 35 and adding more signaled crossings, which would make it somewhat longer to get to the mainland.
