there seem to be some reasonably priced apartments around 13th and drexel, 15th and drexel, and also euclid ave around those same streets. Are those areas crappy? I've been to south beach 1000x but I never really ventured west of washington unless I was on lincoln road so don't really know these small "off streets"

That's not a crappy area. Generally small apartments and not upscale, but not unsafe. The cheaper ones may be in less desirable buildings or have noisy neighbors etc. Mostly on-street parking.

Very safe area but there is a reason they are cheap. These or usually old small buildings. Few amenities, small apartments, 2-4 floors, many wont have an elevator etc.. Probably built in the 60s-70s. A good location and safe just not the nices buildings.

To be honest, the area is pretty crappy. I use to live there, and I did not like it. The buildings are very rickety and a bunch are in dire need of repair(The apartment we lived in was tiny, and there was a ton of bugs! Also the floor was very scratched up and splintery.). Occasionally, there are some shady people roaming around mostly in daylight, nighttime is okay-ish, Although the tourists will grind your nerves real badly!

The neighborhood is fine, but the apartments are small, crappy, and poorly managed. You could get a better place in North Beach.
