Apparently Fort Lauderdale tourism officials think they have what it takes to host the Summer Olympics.

Neither one,I think the Orlando/Tampa area would have a better chance and it's still not a great one.

If Miami or Ft. Lauderdale had any chance of the Olympics they would have to do it together.

We've talked about it before here.

Miami has quite a few facilities that would work well for the Olympics. The missing links are items that already are needed-

An Olympic village and stadium in Overtown (to be used afterwards for the Dolphins.) Overtown because of its proximity to Downtown but the undesirable nature of being right next to 95. A stadium needs direct access to a major road like that, though.

Miami Marine Stadium would finally get a rehab.

Even Amelia Earhart park has skateboarding facilities if I'm not mistaken (it was a while ago we talked about it! LOL!)

Homestead for the equestrian aspect.

UM has facilities for quite a few events.

The other major expense would be the expansion of mass transit. Hosting the Olympics would hopefully spur the feds to give Miami a sizable chunk to do this.

Yes that makes about as much sense as Athens, a debt ridden corrupt disaster. Thankfully, the Olympics will never come to south Florida. Oh yes, imagine the big H interrupting ceremonies. I would love to see them sailing or rowing Biscayne bay when a thunderstorm hits!~

The biggest hurdle with the Olympics is what to do with all the infrastructure after the games.
Since Miami is a metropolitan area with several universities there isn't a problem with usage afterwards (small structures like a handball arena could easily be turned into a college basketball arena afterwards).

well as for as basketball and gym event arenas are concerned Miami has 3 so that's taken care of. for me the biggest obstacle would be the construction of the Olympic village along with mass transit issues. The Heat and humidity of South Florida isn't anything the Olympics hasn't dealt with before (see Olympics 96 in Atlanta) what is an issue are the daily afternoon storms that would stop events because of lightning and given the fact the Olympics last about a month, odds are that a few severe storms will occur during that time flooding certain events and ruining others. besides the weather, another problem is that the only stadium capable of hosting the Olympics(dolphins stadium) is 15 miles from Downtown Miami which means that tourists staying in hotels on the beach and in Brickell would have to get a car unless the orange line north is built.
