Hi,
I have another thread going regarding moving to Miami but have another question. We are moving to Miami in about 2 weeks time from overseas and will be staying downtown - Brickell area for about 2 months until our furniture arrives. Is downtown a decent place to live with small children? Have a 1 yr and 3 yr old. I know I will figure it out soon enough while staying there for the next 2 months but curious in advance. If I was to drive to Coral Gables for my child's nursery- would I be going against traffic and how long would it take me?
Thanks

Downtown--no. Brickell--probably okay. Overall, Brickell is nice...it's largely a financial/business area, so there's lots of activity and people around during the day, but it clears out at night. It can get kind of seedy at night and a lot of the homeless sleep downtown. I'd say you and your kids will be nice and safe during the day, but I wouldn't walk around at night (even without your kids). This concept probably goes for Miami as a whole though...

I pass through downtown on my way to Coral Gables every day during peak traffic times (around 8am and then again around 6pm). For the most part, you'll be against the traffic. The commute isn't too bad. I-95 South is usually a breeze, but the major traffic congestions hit on US-1 around Coral Gables. I'd estimate 30 minutes, depending on where exactly you're going in Coral Gables and when. Since you're in Brickell, you might be able to work it out using the Metrorail and the Metromover (free) and you'd save a lot of time and gas money (not to mention the frustration of sitting in 2 mph traffic...)

Hope this helps!

The Brickell area is very upscale, clean and very taken care of. Going to the gables in the morning from there would have you going against traffic.

When you say downtown I'm assuming you mean the Brickell area, I don't see why this would be a bad place for children. Coconut grove has nice parks and Key Biscayne is really close and they have lots to do for kids. The Seaquarium is there as is Crandon park which is a family-friendly beach.

Good Luck!

Thank you for your response. I am wondering if I am mixing downtown up with what or where Brickell Ave is. Hhmmm. My husband will be working on Brickell Ave- about a block or two from Biscayne Bay we are told. I thought this was considered downtown? I think it is near a Four seasons tower or something like that? I am used to seediness to a certain degree and certainly don't plan on being out a night due to the children but I am sure it will be fine won't it?

Well, Brickell is a neighborhood within downtown Miami. Brickell itself is a very nice, upscale area with lots of luxury condos and apartments. The rest of downtown can be questionable. Sorry for the confusion. You'll be in a nice area--don't worry!

Brickell Ave runs through Miami's upscale downtown area. It turns into Biscayne Boulevard a little further north from where you will be.

When Brickell Ave turns into Biscayne boulevard it kinda signifies you're leaving the upscale downtown area and entering the more "common" area if you will.

You'll be fine. Brickell is a real nice area with lots of luxury condos and offices. However when you are here you may not want to live their permenantly with children. These decisions obviously depend on your budget, but their are really nice areas nearby that are friendlier to families (15 minutes or less commute). I will list them with the most desirable first: Key Biscayne, Coral Gables, Miami Beach (North of South Beach), Coconut Grove, South Miami, Morningside, The Roads, Coral Gate, Silver Bluff/Sheonandoah area and West Miami.Good luck and you'll love it here.
