I've encountered scammers galore on Craigslist Miami while looking for a summer sublet. Most of them pretended to be property managers and used photos stolen from Airbnb in their listings. I've also encountered a couple of absentee landlords who apparently all live in Alaska.

Is Craigslist Miami really that bad? Boston and NYC were fine - the vast majority of listings were authentic.

Thanks! Would you recommend other means of finding a sublet? I've been using Airbnb (Trustworthy but limited options) and Zillow/Trullia (Mostly 1 year leases though). Thanks!

My son found his sublet through Craigslist. You have to be careful but there are some real listings. His place is way out in West Kendall so probably not at the top of scammers' radars.

Yeah, Craigs list has a particularly bad reputation in Miami, which means that normal people don't even bother putting in their listings, increasing the percent of scammers.

A lot will depend on where and how long you need to rent. Are you aware that rentals under 6 months in length are subject to taxes here?

Sometimes "cheap" will cost you big. Be careful.

Craigslist, in general.

I just read in my local paper of someone posting ad for rental of home in our local area but "prospective" tenants super happy that they caught on with some help and were not conned out of their money.

Thanks folks! Yep, I've heard of the taxes on leases of less than 6 months thing. Guess I'll stick to Airbnb for now.
