I've been watching the Underline take shape over the past couple of years and am seeing the fruition of the effort in a planned city park in one of the most disgusting parts of the Brickell financial district. I applaud the effort but question the reality.

Does Brickell need an 'urban park' and is the metrorail station the correct place for it? I am not sure. Miami has a real perception problem and hanging out underneath a highway may not sound like the most tasteful of past times. Maybe this can be a good change for the city.

They had nothing else to do with the area, so might as well make it into something, a park is fine by me, it is not like they are going to build buildings there or something.

Miami has a real perception problem? Which would be???

Only issue I see is keeping the bums out from taking up the space and trashing the areas.

Its supposed to go the length of the Metro Rail to Dadeland, not just a park in Brickell.

Maybe it is to prevent the return of Bookville? Parks everywhere?

Its has to be better than looking at plain concrete pillars parallel to US1.

Miami actually has the best perception (of a Floridian city) to most states. I moved from California and Miami was the city most people wanted to visit, second was Orlando (in Florida).

Lol, I was in a Philly suburb this past weekend and went to an OrangeTheory gym up there...they asked what studio I was from and said Miami and both ladies "What are you doing here??".

Just the name Miami carries a lot of weight with people, even if its based on a facade.

Correct. I went to a public meeting at the beginning of this year that narrowed the focus to the first stages of the project, the parks in Brickell. The presentation was beautifully done. I think it was the same firm that did worked on the NYC Highline?

One thing i would do to improve the design thought would be to switch the basketball court out for turfed soccer field. That would give a focal point to the park, provide something for everyone to watch, and you know food vendors would show up on weekends.

Have you heard of William Whyte's The Social Life of Small Urban Places? If not, I would recommend it. Whyte was a "American urbanist, organizational analyst, journalist and people-watcher" to quote Wiki. In his book he has a chapter on "undesirables" and debunks the conventional thinking on the people who are unwanted in public spaces. His argument is that the more welcoming a space, the more wholesome the environment will be.

Just curious but what do you deem to be a "disgusting" part of Brickell ?

Seriously.......
